Principal Investigator

Dr. Shuyan Sun

Dr. Sun joined the UMBC Department of Psychology as Assistant Professor of Quantitative Methods in August 2012 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in July 2018. Her research and teaching are focused on applied statistics, measurement, and their applications in the social and behavioral sciences. In addition to her methodological work on multilevel modeling, meta-analysis, and psychometrics, Dr. Sun has been conducting research on engaged learning in formal and informal environments. She is a lead researcher on the University System of Maryland LSAMP project and recently received awards from the NSF and the Spencer Foundation to conduct cutting-edge research on engaged learning. Dr. Sun is particularly interested in using advanced quantitative methods, intensive data, and new technology to enhance learning for children and college students.

 

Research Assistants

Rebecca Dowling

Rebecca is a doctoral student in the Applied Developmental Psychology program at UMBC. Her research examines the associations between early childhood classroom practices and academic development in diverse populations.

Allison French

Allison is a first year doctoral student in the Applied Developmental Psychology program at UMBC. She received her B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Gender and Women’s Studies, as well as a Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) certification at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY.  Her current research interests are focused on the achievement gap for gender in STEM related courses and majors. In her free time she enjoys reading, painting, traveling, listening to music and spending time with friends and family.
